For centuries, the peoples of China and India have been cultivating tea plants, crushing them up and using them as the basis of beverages both hot and cold. This practice spread, first to neighboring regions of Asiatic countries, then to Europe via the British imperialists. Today, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, not counting water, of course. It is estimated that well over one billion people consume tea at least somewhat regularly, which is great news when it comes to the overall health of the world’s population.
There are three main types of tea: green, black and oolong. Generally, these come from the same plants. The difference often lies in the way the teas are processed. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, “Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols.” Antioxidants fight free radicals within our bodies. Free radicals are cited as agents of cell damage, heart disease, cancer and aging. In other words, green tea helps our bodies to fight against all the above ailments.
Studies have shown that green tea helps keep our bodies from developing atherosclerosis, or, the hardening of the arteries. It does this, apparently, by lowering the levels of cholesterol and triglyceride in our bodies. On top of this, green tea has been suggested by some studies to help prevent against cancer. While this has, by no means, been proven beyond a reasonable doubt, the studies that have been conducted suggest that there is a high correlation between intake of green tea and lower rates of cancer. Specifically, green tea has been shown to help with cancer of the bladder, breast, ovaries, esophagus, lung, pancreas, prostate, skin, and a few others.
Green tea is not only healthy for the body in and of itself, but it is a great substitute for unhealthy substances such as soda and other sugar-heavy beverages. The western diet is so high in sugar that introducing a few cups of green tea in the place of any other beverage could do wonders for the average person’s diet.
